A few years ago, I bought an empty Ram ProMaster cargo van to make travel simpler and more flexible for my landscape photography trips. Hotels were limiting, and constant packing and unpacking wore thin. I wanted a mobile basecamp that could go wherever the road led.
Starting with a bare shell, I built a fully functional camper van from the ground up. Every choice, from layout to electrical to storage, was driven by real travel needs. The result is a practical, comfortable setup that has taken me across the country and into places I would have otherwise missed.
Here, I share what worked, what didn’t, and what truly matters when building and traveling in your own van.
Quick paths into the build, the road, and the gear I use.

About
Camper Van Traveler grew from a simple desire to travel more freely and spend more time outdoors. Building my own van changed the way I travel and the way I think about being on the road. Along the way, I learned a lot, some things the hard way, and this site exists to pass that experience on. You’ll find practical guidance, real-world lessons, and honest insight into van life and camping. To learn more about the journey behind it all, visit the About page.
